Free backup solution for Exchange 2003/2007

One of the most important tasks for an Exchange administrator is the regular backup of Exchange databases. This can be easily accomplished by using the built-in free backup software - NTBACKUP and professional Exchange Server backup software. This article is describing these two methods separately.

Backup Exchange with free backup sfotware - NTBACKUP

NTBACKUP is the free backup software included in Windows Server 2000 and 2003, which can be used to create backups of Exchange Server 2003, 2007 and 2010. Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2008 no longer supports Exchange-aware backups or restores. You must use an Exchange-aware application that supports the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) writer for Exchange 2003 and 2007.

Click Start, point to Run, type NTBACKUP and click Ok (or press Enter).
If the Backup or Restore Wizard appears, on the Welcome to the Backup or Restore Wizard page, click Advanced Mode.
Click on the Backup tab.
Expand Server name, expand Microsoft Information Store, select the correct Storage Group's check-box or the entire Information Store check-box.
On the Backup Destination choose the right device. In the Backup Media or Filename make sure you enter a descriptive name for the backup job.
Click on the Start Backup button. In the Backup Job Information window make sure you have your settings right.
You can also press the Advanced button and select the Backup Type and the Schedule.
When the backup is finished, in the Backup Progress dialog box, click Report. If no errors are listed, the backup was successful.
